Biographical Narrative & Practice

Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury graduated in architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1995. Following work with prominent regional studios, he founded URBANA in Dhaka.

Chowdhury's notable projects include the Friendship Centre in Gaibandha—a sunken brick campus inspired by the Mahasthangarh Buddhist ruins—and the Friendship Hospital in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, which was awarded the RIBA International Prize.

Designed by Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury / URBANA for the NGO Friendship, this training facility in rural Gaibandha is sunken into the surrounding floodplain and surrounded by an earthen embankment. Inspired by the monastic ruins of Mahasthangarh, the complex features a labyrinth of open brick courtyards, reflecting pools, and naturally ventilated pavilions.
